Prepare for Disasters Part 2

Medical Supplies

The second part of this series is about medical supplies. During Hurricane Katrina, our local hosptial became low on medications. Some hosptials were short on staff because they couldn't get to work. Road closures and flooding made it near impossible to get to a hospital.

Do you have enough medical supplies on hand? Imagine over a month of stores being closed. Here are a few items to keep on hand in case of an emergency:

1. A First Aid kit is a good start. Make sure there are bandages for large wounds in it.

2. An Eye Wash Kit is a great thing to have.
3. Tweezers for splinters and other uses.
4.  Alcohol for cleaning wounds and hands.
5. If you have time, fill all prescriptions.

6. Pain relievers and antihistamines

  1. Looks like a pretty comprehensive list. I would include needle and thread for an on-the-go stitches kit. Not the absolutely best circumstances, but in an emergency, it may be needed.

  2. This is a great post. A lot of people don't realize that they need to have some of this on hand when they live in areas susceptible to natural disasters....not just run out and get it when something is forecasted to head their way!

  5. Great list - I would've never thought about an eye wash kit - but definitely something that seems like it would be needed - thanks!

  6. I would add baby wipes to the list. In a disaster clean water may be scarce but you can clean your hands with baby wipes and then use hand sanitizer to disinfect.

  7. I'm so happy you wrote about this. So many people forget about medical supplies when thinking about disaster preparation. I love to use my coupons to stock up on medical supplies. People might think I'm crazy for keeping multiples of stuff on hand, but it will be needed if a disaster should ever happen! Thanks for sharing!

  15. We have a very well stocked first aid kit that includes extras of needed prescriptions to get us by for a few days. We remember to swap out the meds every couple of months so nothing is expired. We also have smaller kits for the car.

  18. It's always a smart more to keep medical supplies in an Emergency Kit, you never know if you'll need them - so - I always have a box with many different medical supplies.

  22. ya know this is interesting..because when I'm pregnant I have to remain on blood thinners. If I don't have any I could get a blood clot. how scary it would be without my meds!

  25. All quite important to have, especially those required prescriptions. A first aid kit that is more like a stock of supplies to last months would be the best solution it seems. It's true that medical care can be taken for granted in these situations and even available, the health care workers and their supplies might not be enough to take care of everyone right away. Thanks for these reminders!
